Moving Minds
Moving Mountains

Utah Shattering Silence Coalition is a volunteer, grassroots organization of people with serious mental illness (brain disorders), their families and caretakers, and their allies

We are united by purpose and our shared mission.
We work to be a voice for change in a broken,
fragmented, and siloed system.

We are united by purpose and our shared mission. We work to be a voice for change in a broken
fragmented, and siloed system.

Our loved ones who are affected by serious mental illness/brain disorders are “dying with their rights on” at the detriment of their real, living rights. There is no freedom in psychosis.

Our vision
Our vision
Our vision

To recognize the humanity and dignity of people with serious mental illness/brain disorders through education and advocacy for compassionate, effective, and accountable care.

We are building a grassroots effort to address the urgent needs of Utah-based adults and youth with serious mental illness/brain disorders who are not receiving the essential services and treatment they need and deserve. We are working to drive systemic change, expand access to care, and protect the rights and dignity of those living with serious mental illness and brain disorders.

We do this by moving minds and systems: Challenging stigma and discrimination, working to shift public perception, building empathy through truth-telling and lived experience.

What we do
What we do
What we do

We advocate for systemic reforms that improve care and support and give voice to families and recognize their importance as a support

We raise awareness about the realities of serious mental illness/brain disorders, psychosis, and anosognosia (a condition that causes a lack of insight that prevents many people from understanding they need treatment and assistance, which is a major barrier to accessing treatment and the path to recovery). We also help every person receive compassionate, equitable, evidence-based quality care.

About us

We are concerned about the criminalization of people with serious mental illness and brain disorders. We need a strong mental health system to keep people out of the criminal justice system, off the street, and in the community where they can live full lives. Mental illness is not a crime!

The Utah Shattering Silence Coalition is a volunteer organization that is a grassroots movement for families and people with lived experience (peers) to advocate for critical changes in the systems that serve people with serious mental illness/brain disorders: The mental health, crisis, criminal justice, and housing systems.

Your stories and ideas can be anonymous (just share the County you are in). We would like to know of your experience with the various systems (behavioral health, criminal justice, crisis, housing, etc.). What worked? What would you like to change? We will be sure your stories and ideas are heard!
